Why Dog Dental Hygiene Matters: Keep Your Pup’s Smile Healthy 🦷🐶

When it comes to our dogs’ health, most of us think about things like food, exercise, or grooming—but dog dental hygiene is just as important. In fact, neglecting your dog’s teeth can lead to serious health issues, from gum disease to heart and kidney problems.

If brushing your dog’s teeth feels overwhelming or you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry—you’re not alone. In this post, we’ll break down why dental care for dogs matters, how to clean your dog’s teeth, and the best products to make it easier.

Doggy Dental Has Become a BIG Deal!

Trying Out New Ideas to Keep Up With the Dog’s Dental Cleaning Routine

We’ve been working hard on improving our dog dental hygiene—and the cat’s too! Especially after Birdie and Milo had to have a lot of teeth pulled last year, we realized just how important it is to stay on top of their dog teeth cleaning routine.

Since then, we’ve been testing out different dog dental care products to help keep their chompers healthy and clean—especially between professional doggy dental cleanings.

Here’s a list of the dental care items we’ve used or tried to keep our pets’ teeth in top shape:

🐾 Why Is Dental Hygiene Important for Dogs?

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from:

  • Plaque and tartar buildup
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Gingivitis and periodontal disease
  • Painful infections
  • Tooth loss
  • Systemic health issues (such as heart, liver, or kidney disease)

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, most dogs show signs of dental disease by age 3. That’s why regular dog teeth cleaning and preventive care are so important.

🪥 How to Clean Your Dog’s Teeth

If you’ve never brushed your dog’s teeth before, it’s easier than it sounds. Here are a few methods to try:

1. Brush Their Teeth

Use a dog-specific toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste). Start slowly—let your pup lick the toothpaste first, then gently introduce brushing a few times a week.

😬 No-Brush Dog Toothpaste Chews

Let’s be honest—brushing your dog’s teeth every day is hard. (Especially when you brush your own teeth in the shower like I do!) Thankfully, we discovered these No-Brush Toothpaste Dental Dog Treats by Ark Naturals (or Antelope Pets), and the dogs are obsessed.

They’re a 4-in-1 doggy dental chew:

  • 🦴 A tasty treat
  • 🦷 A toothbrush
  • 💦 A toothpaste
  • 🧼 A plaque remover

We found them during a holiday run to Kohl’s and have been hooked ever since. They last longer than standard dog chews and do a solid job cleaning teeth in between vet visits.

🛍️ They’re now listed on Birdie’s Doghouse in our Dog Store!

💸 One Downside: The Price

The only thing I don’t love? The price. Even at a discount—about $10 for a pack of 15–24—it adds up fast, especially when you’re feeding six animals and the recommended serving is two dental treats per day. But honestly? It’s cheaper than another round of extractions. 🐾

2. Dental Chews for Dogs

Not all dogs love brushing, so dog dental treats and chews are great alternatives. Look for VOHC-approved products that help scrape away plaque as your pup chews.

We love these classic Greenies Dental Treats for dogs because the pups think they’re just getting a treat—but little do they know, they’re also getting their teeth cleaned! These are one of the easiest and most effective dental chews for dogs out there.

3. Dental Spray for Dogs & Water Additives

These are ideal for in-between cleanings or for dogs who hate having their mouth touched. A quick spray or an additive to their water can help control bacteria and freshen breath.

We picked up a dog dental spray to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. It’s a quick and easy way to freshen their breath and support overall oral health—especially on those days when brushing just doesn’t happen.

We got this dental spray for dogs to help with tartar buildup.

4. Regular Vet Dental Cleanings

Professional dog dental cleanings under anesthesia are the most thorough way to assess and clean your dog’s teeth. Your vet can spot problems early and remove tartar that you can’t reach at home.
